Elizabeth "Beth" Harmon is a fictional character and protagonist of Walter Tevis's novel The Queen's Move and the Netflix drama series of the same name. Beth is a child prodigy who was orphaned at the age of 9 when her mother died in a car accident. Growing up in an orphanage, she studied chess with the caretaker Mr. Scheibel, and she soon became a strong player. As a teenager, she was adopted, and she began to rapidly grow professionally in the chess world, challenging the best Soviet chess players.
