According to Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias, Sub-Zero was originally conceived as a character named Ninja, a mysterious representative of the Lin Kuei. John Tobias tweeted that the inspiration came from Li Xin's book The Chinese Ninja Connection, which “postulates historical evidence for the existence of the Lin Kuei and its influence on Japanese ninjas. I knew that there was some disagreement with the author's statements.
