Darth Maul was a male Zabrak from Dathomir and a Dark Lord of the Sith who lived during the final years of the Galactic Republic. He was born on Dathomir, where he was given to Darth Sidious as an apprentice. Sidious sent the young Zabrak to a training facility on Mustafar, where he began to train him. Darth Maul became the master of Juyo, Niman/Jar'Kai, and Teras-kasi. His training in the ways of the Sith violated the Rule of Two because his own master was at the time an apprentice of another Sith Lord, Darth Plagueis. Around 34 BBY, Maul created his own dual lightsaber to defeat the Jedi Cyolo'Urman.
